Well my first impression of "BUG" was a stupendous reference of their talents by a close, yet illusive friend of mine;
FooManChoo. Full with stories of spicy peppers, and sizzl'in "Woks". I
know Foo, believe me... it had to be a worthy show. So at his recommendations, and a sparked curiosity I headed out...
Upon arriving at the Whiskey in downtown Wilmington, I was delighted by the dominant stage area given to the band. If you haven't been there, the Whiskey isn't a large venue, but the stage is comparable to many medium sized shanties. Plus the bartender was highly skilled and very courteous. One of the best Margaritas I've had. A great environment for getting loose.
So, now let's focus on the band. The rhythm was solid, the energy lively.
Great guitar plateaus pioneered by Phil Rollinson, and sonic keyboard vistas laid down by Chris Bagley, were non stop!
They had a guest guitarist sit in, but I honestly didn't notice the difference. No offense, but Phil was holding his own. And the beat drove on relentlessly, not too droning but perfectly
funky, crafted by Patrick Neilson. This guy has a good sized set, and was all over the place!!
I actually found myself dancing, along with most of the front row. A very good time for me and my guests!
On words of critique or opinion...
They were a bit "Jam Band", which I love but, their sound yearned for perfection. A little more structure, and composition tricks; like cutting to only one instrument, or everyone playing the same lick in time, could really solidify this bands talent. Sometimes you can pull off the best thing with no planning...and sometimes a little planning goes a long way.
However that's not to say they were "sloppy" in anyway..once again, just my opinion.
I do have one regret. This band laid down the jam so long, I never got to meet them!!
Hehehehe...
Unfortunately I had prior obligations, after an hour or so, I had to resign my seat to one of the many hotties attending. (D'OH!!)
Bottom Line
BUG rocks! This band has mucho potential.
Very creative musicians. I loved some of the sounds they created.
I can say I would definitely check them out again!
Maybe even share a brew?
Check out their profile!
